The Rookie Lifeguard program is the RLSS UK's junior award scheme. Rookie Lifeguard will be most children's first opportunity to learn about water safety and alternative, safe aquatic play.
The Rookie skills teach Rookies how to take better care of themselves, their families, and friends, as well as provide them with the information they need to promote water safety in their daily activities. The awards cover survival, rescue, and sports skills, as well as Life Support and water safety. Rookie Lifeguard is primarily aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years old. Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability level suitable for swimmers who have just learned to swim and progresses to the level of performing Lifesaving tows, beginning with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progressing through Stage 3 of the Gold Award. RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard programme is taught using colourful materials, and fun, varied lifesaving and rescue activities to give children the skills they need to be confident in the pool or the sea and enjoy water safely, whether in shallow or deeper water.
